SPECTRAL MORTUARY - Total Depravity CD Review

ARTIST: Spectral Mortuary
TITLE: Total Depravity
YEAR: 2012
LABEL: Deepsend Records
REVIEWED BY: Caroline Restiaux

Denmark has been the breeding grounds for quite a few talented Metal bands over the years. Hatesphere, King Diamond, Panzerchrist and Mercyful Fate may be a few that come to mind right away. Amongst these great Danish musicians comes a new addition that goes by the name of Spectral Mortuary. The band was formed back in 2003 however this is the first I have heard of them. I am glad that I have now been introduced to this band and look forward to hearing more from them.

"Total Depravity" is the bands second full-length album. After listening to this album you would guess that they have been around for much longer. They pummel away at your senses song after song with a humungous amount of energy playing through their music. Morten Møller Jørgensen reaches to the bowels of the earth to deliver a spectacular gutteral performance. Their songs may seem to lack a bit in versatility when compared to each other however the consistency works for an album of this magnitude. There is no ups and downs here! The last couple of songs are just as heavy and drilling as the first. 'Lapidated' and 'Absorbing the The Bloodline' are two of my personal faves on the release.

What I really like about Spectral Mortuary is that they keep the heart of Death Metal where it should be by delivering it in an old school sort of way with refreshing tones. No need to be all fancy and over technical because when you have true talent there is really no sense in messing around.

"Total Depravity" is a must listen to for all Death metal fans. You would be missing out if you didn't give Spectral Mortuary some of your time. I would love to see these guys live and hope that they treck down to Canada in the near future. With Deepsend Records behind them that may become a reality sooner then later. If this album is any indication of what to expect in 2012 from Metal bands then we are all in for a treat. What a great way to start off the year!
